HORDERN RICHMOND AIRCRAFT LTD
AN ICONIC NAME BEHIND WORLD
WAR II AVIATION EST 1937
Established in 1937 by Edmund Hordern and his friend Frederick Gordon-Lennox, the 9th Duke of Richmond, the Hordern Richmond Aircraft Company began with the construction of the Autoplane twin-engined aircraft.
In the late 1930’s, Hordern Richmond invented a type of compressed resin impregnated wood called Hydulignum. Being stiff and strong yet relatively light, the technological breakthrough that was Hydulignum proved perfect for the construction of aircraft propellers. The company became synonymous with the design and manufacture of aircraft propellers, providing many of the propellers for fighters and bombers during World War II.
Today, Hordern Richmond is still closely associated with the manufacture of Spitfire propellers as well as propellers for both historic and modern aircraft under the auspices of the Hercules brand.
